Class Descriptions

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Flow is a dynamic style of yoga and refers to the synchronisation of breath with movement. Derived from Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa flow incorporates many of the same postures but the order and variance of the postures often change. Postures flow into another to the rhythm of the breath making it a quickly paced, more fluid and more creative practice.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga refers to the practice of physical yoga postures and is a general category that includes most yoga styles. It is an old system that includes the practice of asanas (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises), which help bring peace to the mind and body, preparing the body for deeper spiritual practices such as meditation. The word “hatha” can be translated two ways: as “willful” or “forceful,” or the yoga of activity, and as “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha), the yoga of balance. In most cases Hatha classes are relatively gentle, slow and great for beginners or students who prefer a more relaxed style where they hold poses longer.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga came to the west through students of Sri Pattabhi Jois, who passed away in 2009 after establishing his yoga center in Mysore, India. Traditional Ashtanga yoga follows the same sequence and series of poses in a precise order. This dynamic, physically demanding practice synchronizes breath and movement to produce an internal heat designed to purify the body.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with postures, or asanas that are held for longer periods of time—for beginners, it may range from 45 seconds to two minutes; more advanced practitioners may stay in one asana for five minutes or more.
Yin Yoga poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body—the tendons, fascia, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. Even though it is passive, Yin Yoga can be quite challenging due to the long holds. A more meditative approach to yoga, Yin aims at cultivating awareness of inner silence, and bringing to light a universal, interconnecting quality.
